This issue had been planned for awhile. We wanted to focus on the integration of electronic health/medical records and clinical trial data. The moves among CDISC and other standards bodies, clinical technology vendors, and the stimulus package of '09 indicated the importance of an improved leap between health care and research. The implications for data sharing between health care and clinical trials are far-reaching: improved subject recruitment, potential investigator mining, drug safety in the real world, cost vs. effectiveness of drugs, and much more. The peer-reviewed articles and Guest Commentary included in this issue are on target toward clarifying the state of EDC/EHR integration.

And then, Oracle announced it intended to purchase Phase Forward.

This is not an insignificant announcement. Most people in the industry were surprised. And it will be one of those events marked by before and after.

Before Oracle announced its intention to purchase Phase Forward, with hopes to finalize the transaction sometime in mid-2010, analysts and observers were anticipating consolidation in the EDC space.

Last August, we reported on Health Industry Insights eClinical Buyer's Guide, EDC report. The report's author told us at the time to expect further consolidation of EDC vendors. But honestly, we thought it would be among smaller EDC vendors. Who thought it was going to be among two of the top three eClinical solutions providers?

In early April, before the announcement, Oracle held its Fifth Annual Life Sciences Forum in Princeton. Here Neil de Crescenzo, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Oracle Health Sciences Global Business Unit, outlined Oracle's vision—a clear, direct vision supported by facts. Basically, health care and clinical will continue to converge because pharmaceutical companies (and biotech and med devices) need to get a big picture of their business based on economic/health reform trends and also move toward targeted therapies and "precision" health care.

So again kismet comes to play in the editorial area. We plan an EHR/EDC clinical trial integration issue and one of the largest IT providers that plays in two vertical business units (Life Sciences and Healthcare) purchases one of the largest clinical software and services players, right at the same time we produce this issue.

Off the record, one industry expert told me that this is both an interesting and daring move. "It does show that Oracle is making a serious move to take a more dominant position in [this] area and that they recognize the synergies between clinical research and health care."
